(Fairchild Photo Service/Condé Nast/Corbis) M ichael Kors is on an epic winning streak.p Sales at the New York-based luxury brand leapt 40 percent in the second quarter, easily beating Wall Street\'s expectations, while same-store sales — a measure of growth excluding expansion — rose 23 percent, marking the 30th straight quarter of increases.p Wall Street is along for the ride. Since welcoming Michael Kors in 2011 with the biggest IPO in fashion history, the stock price has risen 400 percent, an impressive streak that just last week helped the company win a spot on the S&P 500.p \"It\'s hard to find anything that\'s wrong with the company right now,\" says CNN. Here, a quick look at what\'s right:p Accessories Customers are gobbling up Michael Kors\' accessories, items that span from $150 watches to $3,000 handbags, says Reuters . \"By driving a frequent flow of new and innovative products through its own stores and wholesale shops, the company is generating consumer excitement in a way we\'ve never seen in the luxury accessories category,\" an analyst told Reuters .p And that excitement is paying off. This quarter\'s success was \" driven by strength across our accessories and watch offerings and strong consumer response to our jet-set in-store experience,\" said CEO John Idol in the earnings release.p Wearability How does a luxury brand set itself apart in an industry based on designing eye-catching products? By consistently producing collections that are \"eminently wearable.\" Season after season, Michael Kors makes headlines for runway shows that feature classic pencil skirts and sweater sets that even fashion-shy women can imagine in their closets.p And while other luxury brands strive to appear exclusive and aspirational, Kors embraces a more accessible image. In 2012, the company launched a digital campaign featuring videos of \"real\" women from the Michael Kors office showing how they wear his designs.p HENRYs Rather than targeting the super-rich like Chanel, or the fast-fashion set like Zara, Michael Kors \"was the first retailer to hit the market\'s sweet spot: People with money to spend but who aren\'t rich,\" said Ashley Lutz at Business Insider earlier this year.p And the timing was spot-on. This population, dubbed HENRYs (\"High Earners Not Rich Yet\"), helped Michael Kors thrive during a global economic recession. HENRYs, who make $100,000 to $250,000 a year, are a growing group, according to Lutz, while the wealthiest households are both making and spending less than they used to. There are now 10 HENRY households for every super-rich household, and the HENRYs buy Michael Kors accessories to splurge without being irresponsible.p Mr. Kors himself Michael Kors is not the only brand to zero in on accessories and affordable luxury. Most notably, the company shares the space with Coach, a 70-year-old brand that is struggling under Kors\' momentum, says NASDAQ\'s Investor\'s Observer . Fold in the variety of leathers and exotic skins, hardware finishes and the colors available for both the exterior and lining, and more than 40,000 combinations are possible—though you might consider picking up a Speedy or an Epi as you wait, as bespoke bags can take six months or more from order to completion. The exclusive custom service is the final element for the Fifth Avenue location’s designation as a Maison , a moniker bestowed upon a boutique that offers a comprehensive offering of the savoir-faire. “A Louis Vuitton Maison is conceived as a travel destination influenced by the aesthetics of the city in which it is located, making each unique,” explains the New York–based Chapoulaud-Floquet . “This experience of luxury extends beyond the collections offered and is carefully integrated throughout the store [via] its architectural elements and exhibition spaces for art.”p p br Hand-painting a monogram on a custom briefcase p p Sharing space with those custom orders is another category that’s grown in importance in recent years for Louis Vuitton : watches and fine and high jewelry. Like those special-order trunks and bespoke bags, high jewelry is a collection of often one-of-a-kind pieces that showcase the artistry of the house. In 2012 Louis Vuitton took a huge leap forward in its commitment to jewelry when it opened its first dedicated jewelry boutique in a 17th-century townhouse in Paris’s Place Vendôme , the famed square that also includes jewelry boutiques from the likes of Boucheron , Van Cleef & Arpels , and Chanel .p p Glass cases in the Fifth Avenue boutique were designed not only to house Vuitton’s growing selection of watches and fine jewelry, but also to allow New York to become a requisite stop when the high-jewelry pieces make their global rounds. Not unlike that coated Monogram canvas, here again you see the codes of the house, with the signature flowers or LV logo interpreted in diamonds or adorning the face of a status watch. Among the high-jewelry pieces, a standout is a yellow-and white-diamond choker, its graphic design seemingly abstract, until you realize the artisans have actually replicated the Paris street map, with yellow diamonds where monuments would be.p p Vuitton once partnered with outside ateliers to create its pieces, but newly created jewelry workshops above the Place Vendôme boutique have made that practice obsolete, says Hamdi Chatti , Louis Vuitton’s director of fine jewelry and watches. “You cannot ask a designer to design, and then send the design out and have it made elsewhere because it’s not the same mood, it’s not the same spirit,” he says. “The designer and the workshop have to work together because everything is about this beautiful stone. Our customer understands that. It requires patience, and it requires passion because it’s a long process. But at the same time, there are beautiful surprises.”p p Back in Asnières , as craftsmen continue their rhythmic music behind us, a descendant of Louis Vuitton understands the idea more than most, and is confident this aesthetic will continue with future generations: Patrick-Louis has two grandsons, both of whom have expressed a keen interest in the watercolor case he designed and built from start to finish.
